Riviera Maya
The Riviera Maya is 80 miles of beautiful coastline along the Yucatán Peninsula. Stretching from Cancun to Tulum, the Riviera Maya is known for white sandy beaches, clear turquoise water, beach towns for shopping, ecological wonders, historical and artifacts, and hundreds of resorts.
Cancún, at the northernmost point of the Riviera Maya, is a renowned tourist destination and is famous for beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife and lots of water activities. Most travelers will fly into Cancun International Airport; in 2022 over 30 million passengers flew through this expanding airport.
One of the most popular beach towns is Playa del Carmen, located in the middle of the Riviera Maya, and is most known for its shopping along Fifth Avenue. Tulum is at the southernmost point of the Riviera Maya, and is known for white beaches, ancient Mayan ruins and ecologically friendly resorts. Akumal is another ecologically-centered beach town where you can swim with seat turtles in their natural habit, snorkel and dive.
During our 14 years of going to the Riviera Maya, we have gone on many side trips, or excursions. Some of our favorites have been:
- Jungle Tour and Snorkeling
- Xcaret
- Xel-Ha’
- Xplor
- Local shopping at Playa Maroma, Playa del Carmen and Cancun
- Party Boat to Isla Mujeres
- Paradise Beach
There are so many activities you can do when in Mexico. The excursions often include transportation to and from your resort, and some include meals at the activity site. Besides the ones that we mention above, check out these activites!
