The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005 to establish minimum security standards for state-issued identification, officially went into effect at U.S. airports on May 7, 2025. The Phased Enforcement Period (May 2025 – May 2027)
We are currently in the middle of a phased rollout. While a standard state-issued driver’s license is technically no longer sufficient for seamless travel through TSA checkpoints, you can still fly domestically without a REAL ID until May 5, 2027.
However, traveling without a REAL ID or an acceptable alternative (like a passport) now comes with significant hurdles.
The New TSA ConfirmID Fee (Effective Feb 1, 2026)
As of February 1, 2026, if you arrive at a TSA checkpoint without a REAL ID or a valid alternative, you will be subject to the TSA ConfirmID process.
Here is what that entails:
- The Cost: You must pay a $45 non-refundable fee to have your identity verified through this alternative screening process. (This fee covers a 10-day travel window, meaning it will cover your return flight on a typical vacation).
- The Delay: The TSA warns that the ConfirmID process can add 30 minutes or more to your security screening time.
- The Risk: If you cannot be verified through this process, or if you refuse to pay the fee, you will be denied entry through the security checkpoint and will miss your flight.
The Final Hard Deadline: May 5, 2027
The current phased rollout is designed to give Americans time to update their documents, but it will end. May 5, 2027, is the final, hard deadline.
After this date, the TSA ConfirmID workaround will end. Every air traveler 18 and older will absolutely need a REAL ID-compliant document or an acceptable alternative to board domestic flights or access secure federal facilities.
Does Your Vacation Destination Require a REAL ID or a Passport?
Where you plan to vacation dictates exactly which documents you must pack:
- Domestic U.S. Vacations: If you are flying domestically—such as taking a tropical trip to the Florida Keys or staying at top-rated U.S. All-Inclusive Resorts—you must present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or an acceptable federal photo ID.
- International All-Inclusive Destinations: If you are heading out of the country, you need a valid U.S. Passport Book anyway. Because a U.S. passport is a universally accepted REAL ID alternative, having one means you don’t need a state REAL ID to get through airport security.
How to Check if You Have a REAL ID
REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses and identification cards are visually distinguishable from standard state-issued IDs.
They typically feature a star marking in the upper right-hand portion of the card. The specific appearance of the star (e.g., gold star, black star, or a star inside a circle or bear) varies by state, but its presence indicates federal compliance.
Some states (Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington) also issue Enhanced Driver’s Licenses (EDLs). These feature a U.S. flag symbol and are acceptable alternatives to REAL ID.
Acceptable Alternatives to a REAL ID
You do not have to get a REAL ID at your local DMV if you consistently travel with an acceptable alternative. If you present any of the following documents at a TSA checkpoint, you will bypass the $45 ConfirmID fee entirely:
- U.S. Passport or Passport Card: A valid U.S. passport book or card is universally accepted for domestic travel.
- DHS Trusted Traveler Cards: Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, and FAST cards are valid forms of identification.
- U.S. Military ID: Active duty and retired military personnel and their dependents can use their military IDs.
- Permanent Resident Card (Green Card): Lawful permanent residents can use their Green Cards.
- Foreign Government-Issued Passport: A valid foreign passport is accepted for domestic air travel within the U.S.
- Federally Recognized Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe-Issued Photo ID
- HSPD-12 PIV Card (Federal government employee ID)
- Canadian Provincial Driver’s License or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada Card
- Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
- U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766)
- U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential
- Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC)
Do Children Need a REAL ID?
No. The TSA does not require children under the age of 18 to present identification when flying domestically with a companion. The REAL ID requirement only applies to adults aged 18 and older. However, it is always a good idea to check with your specific airline, as they may have their own identification requirements for minors, especially those traveling alone.
