Traveling has always been our favorite way to unwind, reset, and build lifelong memories. To give ourselves the freedom to take what some might consider extravagant vacations, we make a conscious effort to live intentionally in our day-to-day lives.
Don’t get me wrong—I am not a strict minimalist. While I deeply admire people who can live out of a single backpack, that’s just not me! I love my comfort items, and I firmly believe that having tools and surroundings that make life easier and more beautiful is important.
Instead of cutting out everything, we simply prioritize. We choose exactly where we want our money to go, and we look for smart ways to save on items that aren’t at the very top of our priority list.
By adopting these daily habits, we’ve been able to unlock travel experiences we used to only dream about. Here are the exact strategies we use to save big without sacrificing comfort:

1. Become Familiar with Local Thrift Stores
Thrifting is an absolute goldmine once you learn how to navigate it. After a few visits to the shops in your area, you’ll quickly learn which ones carry high-quality goods and which ones aren’t worth your time.
For instance, one thrift store in my area receives regular overstock donations from a popular local boutique. Because of this, I can routinely find the exact same brand-new clothing items there for $5 that the boutique is selling down the street for $35!
Pro-Tip: Don’t be afraid to dig for hidden treasures, and keep an eye out for special discount days. Many thrift shops offer weekly 50% off tags or specific discount days for seniors, teachers, or veterans. One shop near me even runs a 50% off storewide special from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM every single day!
2. Never Pay Retail (Unless You Have To)
Train yourself to only pay full retail price for items that never go on sale. For everything else, keep a running mental or digital list of what you need, and wait to strike until you see a discount.
When you know the baseline price of the items you use regularly, you’ll immediately recognize a great deal when you see it. If an emergency happens and you need an item immediately, you may have no choice but to pay full price. However, if you practice anticipation and track your needs ahead of time, you’ll be amazed by how rarely you ever have to pay retail.
3. Take Time to Hit Up Garage Sales
I absolutely love garage sailing! Beyond the incredible deals, it’s a wonderful way to meet neighbors, get landscaping inspiration from different yards, and find gently used items that still have plenty of life left in them.
If you walked into my home right now, I wouldn’t hesitate to say that 80% of the decor and furniture people compliment us on came directly from a garage sale. Keeping a sharp eye out for pieces on your wishlist will save you hundreds—if not thousands—of dollars down the road.
4. Look at Items Through the Lens of “What It Can Be”
Before you pass up a secondhand item, think about how you can repurpose or upcycle it.
I recently spotted a solid wood, handmade workbench at a garage sale for just $40. While the previous owners used it to store tools in a dusty garage, I saw a different future for it. With a fresh coat of paint and some stylish hardware, I transformed it into a beautiful, character-rich stand-up desk for my home office! I also snagged the old mechanic’s stool they used with it and am currently brainstorming a fun way to re-upholster it to match my decor.
When you look at items for their potential rather than their current state, you can curate a unique, custom-feeling home for a fraction of retail costs.

5. Be Ultra-Selective About What You Outsource
In a world where you can pay someone to do almost anything, it pays to be highly selective about what you outsource.
Over the years, my husband and I looked at our schedules and decided to hire professionals to mow our lawn and maintain our pool. This frees up our time and energy. However, to balance that cost, I handle almost all of our detailed landscaping myself, and my husband takes care of the vast majority of our home maintenance and minor repairs. Finding that right balance ensures you aren’t bleeding cash on tasks you could easily accomplish yourself.
6. Join Local Swap and “Buy Nothing” Groups
Social media has made it easier than ever to get items for free through community sharing. I belong to a local plant swap group where members trade garden extras. If someone has an overgrowth of cannas, they’ll happily trade them for some lilies.
Because many perennials multiply naturally year after year, you probably have items sitting in your garden beds right now that you could trade. It’s a fantastic way to expand your landscaping without spending a dime. Look for “Buy Nothing” groups in your neighborhood for household goods, too!
7. Make Your Credit Cards Work for You
Credit cards can be incredibly dangerous if they aren’t managed properly, and carrying a balance with high interest will quickly ruin any vacation budget. While some financial experts suggest cutting them up entirely, we actually use credit cards for almost every single thing we buy.
The secret? We pay off the balances in full every single month, meaning we never pay a penny in interest.
By routing our normal, everyday expenses through cards that offer high-percentage cash-back rewards or travel points, we let our regular spending fund our future fun. We hoard our cash-back rewards and only redeem them for travel. Believe it or not, we have funded entire all-inclusive trips to Mexico using nothing but credit card rewards!
Why We Do It
At the end of the day, finding a great bargain is a thrill and it feels wonderful to save. But our true “why” is freedom. We save intentionally in our day-to-day lives so we can travel more, vacation deeper, and experience everything this beautiful world has to offer.
