Key West Florida
Key West is a small island located within the state of Florida. It is at the outermost edge of the Florida Keys. The Keys are a small series of islands (over 1,700! islands) but most are not inhabitable. The main inhabited islands include Key Largo, Marathon, Big Pine Key and Key West.
The Keys are know for clear blue waters, active marine life and the only living coral barrier reef in the continental US. This, and the warm year-round climate make the Florida Keys a popular destination for snorkeling, diving and fishing.
The Overseas Highway, connecting the mainland to Key West stretches 113 miles, and includes a bridge that spans almost 7 miles. As you can imagine, this route is incredibly beautiful and picturesque, with plenty of places to stop and take in the breathtaking views. If you drive this route, plan to spend a day or two and enjoy the culture and activities on these small islands.
If you are a snorkeler, consider the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park or Key Largo. For an upscale but quieter time, consider Islamorado where you can enjoy sport fishing and beautiful beaches. Additional snorkeling places include Molasses Reef and Looe Key. The fish are colorful as are the coral formations. You will likely see angelfish, parrotfish, and butterflyfish.
Marine life you will likely encounter on this trip include sea turtles, dolphins, manatees, stingrays, and yes, sharks. Not all sharks are dangerous, such as nurse sharks, blacktip sharks and lemon sharks. However, if I see a shark I am not going to know the difference and so staying away is the best idea 😉!
